A Letter from the Chair

Megan Karnes

The National Hoarding Conference (NHC) was held on 14th May and was sold out!

Since its inception, the NHC has striven to bring people together to inform and empower people with hoarding behaviour and those professionals and informal community members who aim to provide support.

As ever, the engagements and discussions were lively. These will work to underpin the development of the UK National Guidelines. As agreed, ongoing working groups are being developed. We’re in discussions with relevant steering group members to agree how this will move forward.

For now, if you are a person with hoarding behaviour, professional or other who wants to be involved, please email guidelineworkinggroup@hoardinguk.org

The thoughts for the structure at present are that hour long lunch meetings are held commencing September 2026 and then again in January 2027. As things move forward, we can decide whether more or less will be required. The working groups are about ensuring that you can participate in the discussion throughout, not as an afterthought.

The handouts for the day are being collated and will be distributed to attendees. Our expected distribution date is no later than 11th June.

Thank you to Dr Lynne Drummond (Prof), Abbi Hilton, Kat Band and Jo Cooke for being a part of making the day so special.

Understanding the barriers and facilitating factors to mental health help-seeking in adults with hoarding behaviours: a preliminary investigation.”

Laura and her team unveil groundbreaking insights into the challenges and catalysts for help-seeking among individuals with hoarding behaviour.

With new ideas to add to the current school of thought surrounding hoarding, this publication grants readers a deeper understanding into the factors that can help or hinder a person with hoarding behaviours to seek help.

Dr Elizabeth Sillence & Claire Murphy-Morgan

Associate Professor of Psychology (Sillence, E.)
Senior Research Assistant (Murphy-Morgan, C.)

A thematic analysis of an online discussion forum for people with problematic hoarding behaviours.

There have been recent calls to the professionals in the psychology and mental health fields for a better understanding of support groups and the role of peers in relation to hoarding. Sillence and Murphy-Morgan respond to these calls by exploring the threads of a hoarding subcommunity on the online platform Reddit.

These online spaces are atypical of the traditional support group since there are no professionals or facilitators to moderate these conversations, and arguably their accounts may be more honest since the platform offers true anonymity. Sillence and Murphy-Morgan sift through over 1,000 messages on the subreddit, topics like peer support, emotional and practical support and lived experiences are covered.
